The following pages furnish to the reader a popular view of some of the greatest achievements of the intellect, resulting from the discoveries of science, in the wonderful operations of the skill, power and industry of man in the invention and improvement of the arts, and in the construction of machines. Let it be understood then, that with all due conviction of British supremacy in the art of Watch-making, the author of the following pages never ceases to direct his earnest attention to the state of the foreign manufactures, and to devote his best endeavours to bring to the English market the most valuable Horological specimens that emanate from the Swiss school.
