The past five years have seen a revolution in Chinese architecture - the emergence of independent designers, and a number of new stars - and above all new and interesting buildings that are not the product of direct Western influence. These developments have laid the groundwork for an indigenous modernity that differentiates itself from outside schools as well as eschewing the temptation to put a "Chinese-style" roof on ordinary office blocks. The fact that Beijing has been chosen to host the 2008 Summer Olympic Games has been more than a catalyst for the development of high-quality contemporary architecture in China. Major foreign firms like OMA/Rem Koolhaas or Herzog & de Meuron are participating in the design of buildings that will have functions during the Games, but Chinese architects, too, have been mobilized in this massive effort to prepare the country for an unprecedented level of world-wide attention. Architects featured: Atelier Deshaus, FCJZ Atelier Feichang Jianzhu, AZL Atelier Zhanglei, EDGE Design Institute, Fake Design, Herzog & de Meuron, HHF Architects, Arata Isozaki, Jiakun Architects, Kengo Kuma, Li Xiaodong Atelier, MAD, MADA s.p.a.m., Michael Maltzan, Toshiko Mori, NODE - Architecture, OMA/Rem Koolhaas, Pei Zhu, URBANUS Architecture & Design, Wang Hui, Zhu Xiaofeng/Scenic Architecture TASCHEN's new architecture series brings a unique perspective to world architecture, highlighting architectural trends by country. Each book features 15 to 20 architects - from the firmly established to the up-and-coming - with the focus on how they have contributed to very recent architecture in the chosen nation. Entries include contact information and short biographies in addition to copiously illustrated descriptions of the architects' or firms' most significant recent projects. Crossing the globe from country to country, this new series celebrates the richly hued architectural personality of each nation featured.

Architectures In The United Kingdom

The decade since the mid-1980s has seen an unparalleled surge in architectural creativity. Completely new design possibilities have been opened up by technological innovations such as computer-aided design, and at the same time there has been a growing cross-fertilization between architecture and art. The face of today's architecture is shaped by masters such as Frank O. Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas and Tadao Ando, to name but a few. Whether in Japan, the USA or Europe, everywhere the search is on for new forms, and the impressive results of that quest are presented to the reader. Book jacket.

Meier

Architecture now! Arquitectura hoy

From the early days as a member of the New York Five, Richard Meier has been a central figure in contemporary architecture in the United States. With the Getty Center and more recent buildings such as the Jubilee Church in Rome, the New Yorker has cemented his reputation as a truly international figure who has expanded the horizons of contemporary American architecture while maintaining his rigorous approach to design and detailing. Known for carefully conceived grid plans and frequent use of white, Richard Meier is a master of light and space, able to adapt his style to very different circumstances and locations.

A look at the most significant architectural and territorial projects by the world-renowned Chilean architect, a leader in the “geopoetic” methodology in architecture. This is the first major book on Zegers, who practices an intensely artistic and ecological form of architecture based on landscapes in which she builds. Working frequently in timber, Zegers reaches unique, sustainable, and recyclable solutions that combine and rescue the traditional work of Chilean carpenters with modern techniques. In an almost metaphysical journey, in which organic forms, curves, diagonals, and verticals are combined, Zegers affirms her rising presence as a force in ecologically minded architecture. The book includes private residences, hotels, and sacred spaces that evoke the geographical magnitude of the Andean landscape. Each project contains poems and sketches made by the architect. In the Soplo (Breath) House, living occurs without imposed spatial hierarchies, in a continuous flow, between interior and exterior. The Tierra Patagonia Hotel, which Zegers associates with the poetic word viento (wind), emerges beside craggy mountains and the glistening Lake Sarmiento at the entrance of the Torres del Paine National Park, with stunning views of the Patagonia wilderness. Zegers proposes a different approach toward architecture in an expressive search intimately related to Chile, its territory, landscape, and traditions. The large format book is specially printed with a fifth color throughout.

Born in Switzerland in 1943, Mario Botta is a leading member of the Swiss-Italian Ticino school of Architecture. Equally comfortable working on a large scale or with smaller, more intimate projects, he is a maestro when it comes to fusing the strengths of Modernism with the tried and tested forms of tradition. Free and wide-ranging in his use of modern construction techniques, he made his mark with such high-stakes commissions as Evry Cathedral, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Tinguely Museum in Basel. But he is respected particularly for his sensitivity to regional vernacular and to the building's relationship with the land (see his Casa Biachi in Riva San Vitale). Whether designing an office block in Lugano, a home for the elderly in Ticino, or even a celebratory tent for the 700th anniversary of the Swiss Confederation, Botta negotiates sensitively between space and light, the line and the curve, internal symmetry and the benefits of vistas to realise his essentially spiritual vision of an architectural practice for the millennium and beyond.
