"Despite its conventional narrative, the characters in Jaramillo's fourth novel display an acute sense of self-awareness. The novel deals with a millionaire who discovers love late in life, and compares the power of wealth to power of love in the context of a social background marked by corruption and violence. The novel succeeds in its depiction of a society where even love is the victim of violence"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.
