The first novel by the English writer Jane Austen (1775-1817). It was not published until after her death in 1818. To the author's well-known traditional ingredients and the moods of her protagonists, she adds the parody of Gothic novels, so fashionable at the time. A story full of emotion and passion, taken to the point of suspense, a mark of that genre, which would have pleased Cervantes and his immortal Quixote, an admirer and staunch critic of cavalry novels, without losing her trademark wit and social commentary.

Northanger Abbey sigue a Catherine Morland y sus amigos el Sr. y la Sra. Allen en su visita a Bath, Inglaterra. La joven de diecisiete años, Catherine pasa el tiempo visitando a nuevos amigos, como Isabella Thorpe, y yendo a bailes. Catherine es pretendida por el hermano de Isabella, John Thorpe (amigo de la universidad del hermano de Catherine, James) y por Henry Tilney. También se hace amiga de Eleanor Tilney, hermana menor de Henry. El Sr. Henry Tilney la cautiva con su punto de vista sobre las novelas y el conocimiento que tiene de la historia y del mundo. Los Tilney invitan a Catherine a visitar la finca de su padre, Northanger Abbey, que, dado que ella está leyendo la novela gótica de Ann Radcliffe titulada Los misterios de Udolfo, Catherine espera que sea oscura, antigua y llena de misterio y fantasía.
